Nestle Lanka Limited has marked a significant milestone this year, celebrating 120 years of operations in Sri Lanka, highlighting its long-standing contribution to the country’s food and beverage industry and its commitment to community development and sustainability.

Nestle was established in 1906, the company has grown from modest beginnings to become one of the country’s leading food and beverage manufacturers. Today, more than 90% of the products sold locally by Nestlé Lanka are manufactured within Sri Lanka, reflecting its strong local footprint and investment in domestic production.

Guided by the global purpose of its parent company, unlocking the power of food and beverages to enhance quality of life, Nestlé Lanka has played a key role in providing nutritious and high-quality food products to Sri Lankan consumers across generations. Its portfolio includes well-known brands, which have become household names while also promoting healthy and active lifestyles through sports sponsorships and nutrition initiatives.

Beyond consumer products, the company continues to work closely with local dairy and coconut farmers, supporting livelihoods through long-term partnerships, skills development programmes and responsible sourcing practices that contribute to the national economy.

Nestlé Lanka has also intensified its focus on youth empowerment through the Nestlé Needs YOUth initiative, which aims to enhance employability among young Sri Lankans by providing access to skills training, learning opportunities and career pathways. In addition, the company promotes workplace diversity and inclusion, partnering with organisations such as BConnected to improve employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Sustainability remains a core priority for the company. As part of its environmental commitments, Nestlé Lanka has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In 2024, the company commissioned a biomass boiler to reduce emissions and now operates its advanced manufacturing facility in using 100% renewable electricity.

The company has also taken steps to address packaging waste by introducing paper straws in aseptic beverage cartons in 2019 and supporting the establishment of Sri Lanka’s first recycling plant for such cartons. Nestlé Lanka aims to become 100% plastic neutral by 2026.

Commenting on the milestone, Chairman and Managing Director of Nestlé Lanka Bernie Stefan said the anniversary reflects the trust Sri Lankan families have placed in the company over generations and its continued commitment to contributing positively to the country’s economy, communities and environment.
