ParentX, developed by Joseph Fraser Ninewells Hospital, has introduced Sri Lanka’s first dedicated postpartum retreat, bringing to Sri Lanka an internationally recognised model of recovery for mothers after childbirth. Designed to support mothers during the critical weeks following childbirth, ParentX places equal emphasis on a mother’s recovery as it does on the birth of her child.
Often referred to as the fourth trimester, the weeks following childbirth remain one of the least supported stages of motherhood despite growing global recognition of their importance. Around the world, postpartum recovery centres have become an established part of maternal healthcare, helping mothers recover physically, emotionally, and mentally while building confidence in caring for their newborns. ParentX brings this model to Sri Lanka through a programme thoughtfully tailored to the needs, traditions, and lifestyles of local families.
Commenting on the launch, Yoosuf Sabir – Deputy General Manager at Joseph Fraser said: “A mother’s care should not end with the birth of her baby. Recovery after childbirth is a critical stage that deserves the same level of attention as pregnancy itself. ParentX was created to provide mothers with the time, professional guidance, and compassionate care they need to recover, regain confidence, and begin parenthood on the strongest possible foundation. While inspired by internationally recognised postpartum recovery models, every aspect of ParentX has been carefully adapted for Sri Lankan families.”
Developed by the multidisciplinary clinical team at Joseph Fraser, ParentX combines evidence-based postpartum care with culturally familiar practices to create a holistic recovery experience. The programme includes personalised breastfeeding support, newborn care education, physiotherapy, nutrition planning, emotional wellness counselling, mindfulness sessions, Ayurveda-inspired therapies, and guidance for partners and family members to actively support the recovery journey.
The launch comes as postpartum wellbeing receives increasing global attention, with growing evidence that structured support during the fourth trimester improves maternal recovery, strengthens parent-child bonding, supports mental wellbeing, and contributes to better outcomes for both mother and baby.
In Sri Lanka, where birth rates continue to decline, ParentX represents a timely addition to maternal healthcare by helping mothers navigate the fourth trimester with confidence while recognising postpartum recovery as an essential part of the motherhood journey rather than an optional extra.
ParentX reflects Joseph Fraser’s commitment to advancing women’s health by extending care beyond childbirth and addressing an important gap in Sri Lanka’s maternity care landscape.
