Union Assurance, Sri Lanka’s longest-standing private Life Insurer, brought its flagship CSR programme, Union Assurance Suwamaga, to the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Conducted over three days on 28, 29 and 30 June near Sandahiru Seya during the Poson season, the initiative provided free diabetes screenings and health education to pilgrims and the wider public, marking the latest milestone in its ongoing journey. Reflecting the spirit of Poson, a season rooted in compassion, generosity and service, the Company transformed one of Sri Lanka’s largest pilgrimages into an opportunity for thousands to take a proactive step towards better health through early detection and preventive care.
Guided by the purpose of protecting what matters most, Union Assurance continues to extend the role of Life Insurance beyond financial protection. Through Union Assurance Suwamaga, which promotes awareness and early intervention, the Company is helping build healthier communities while taking essential health services directly to people across the country.
Since its launch in 2024, Union Assurance Suwamaga has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most comprehensive private-sector diabetes awareness and screening initiatives. The programme has reached communities across all 25 districts, directly impacting over 23,500 individuals while extending awareness to more than 1.2 million people. Delivered in partnership with the Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Health, it brings together medical expertise, institutional collaboration and community engagement to improve access to early detection and promote healthier lifestyles. The independently validated Union Assurance Suwamaga Impact Report 2025 further reinforces the initiative’s contribution to public health and policy advocacy. The report found that 71% of beneficiaries demonstrated positive behavioural changes following their participation, highlighting the programme’s role in promoting earlier detection and encouraging healthier behaviours to reduce the long-term impact of this silent killer.

Commenting on the initiative, Chief Marketing Officer of Union Assurance PLC, Mahen Gunarathna, said: “At Union Assurance, we believe protecting what matters most begins long before protection is needed. Union Assurance Suwamaga was launched with the vision of addressing one of Sri Lanka’s most pressing public health challenges by making diabetes screening more accessible and encouraging early intervention. Since then, the initiative has continued to build momentum, extending its reach across communities while empowering more Sri Lankans to take proactive steps towards protecting their health.”
“Poson presented a meaningful opportunity to extend this commitment even further. With thousands of pilgrims gathering in Anuradhapura from across the country, we wanted to bring preventive healthcare directly to them, removing some of the barriers that often delay timely health checks. Through Union Assurance Suwamaga, we hope to encourage more Sri Lankans to take that first step towards understanding their health, because timely action can make all the difference.” He further added.
