High Commissioner-designate to the Republic of South Africa Sirisena Amarasekara last week assumed duties at the High Commission of Sri Lanka in Pretoria, South Africa .
The High Commissioner was welcomed by the staff of the High Commission, upon his arrival and following religious observances, he assumed duties officially.
Addressing the staff of the High Commission, Amarasekara emphasized the importance of enhancing economic relations with South Africa and other accredited counties in the post-Covid-19 era while focusing on the promotion of trade, investments, and tourism.
The High Commissioner further highlighted the need for unity and teamwork spirit towards achieving the goals of the High Commission.
Amarasekara has served in the most senior positions of the Government for over five decades and prior to his appointment; he served as Secretary to the Cabinet of Ministers.
Further, Amarasekara has held the posts of Secretary to Prime Minister as well as Secretary to several other key Ministries including Ministry of Highways, in his public service career for more than fifty years.
Amarasekara has been graduated from the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, and earned his postgraduate qualifications in Development studies from the University of Bath, UK.
